RUHRtriennale 2026: complete programme, schedule and highlights of the Ruhr arts festival

The RUHRtriennale 2026 returns from 20 August to 20 September 2026, transforming former industrial landmarks across Germany’s Ruhr region into stages for music theatre, dance, concerts, performance art and contemporary theatre. Under the theme „Longing for Tomorrow“, this year’s edition marks the final season under the artistic direction of renowned Belgian director Ivo Van Hove.

Widely regarded as one of Europe’s most innovative arts festivals, the RUHRtriennale combines world premieres, international productions and site-specific performances in iconic industrial venues such as the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, PACT Zollverein in Essen, and Maschinenhalle Zweckel in Gladbeck.

When is RUHRtriennale 2026?

The festival runs from Thursday, 20 August, to Sunday, 20 September 2026, featuring more than 114 events, 31 productions and around 600 artists from 43 countries. Performances are spread across Bochum, Duisburg, Dortmund, Essen and Gladbeck.

RUHRtriennale 2026 opening event

The festival opens on 20 August 2026 with the world premiere of „Rebel Rebel“, a new music theatre production inspired by the music of David Bowie.

The production imagines a dystopian future where personal relationships are forbidden and social isolation is enforced by law. A young couple challenges the system, with David Bowie’s music serving as the emotional and narrative backbone of the performance.

Due to strong demand, additional performances have been added on 3 and 4 September.

Emily – No Prisoner Be

One of the most anticipated music theatre productions of the festival is Emily – No Prisoner Be, inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

The production combines poetry, classical music and contemporary staging to bring Dickinson’s work to life.

SIDDHARTHA

Based on Hermann Hesse’s famous novel, SIDDHARTHA is one of the major premieres of RUHRtriennale 2026.

The production explores themes of identity, spirituality and self-discovery through a combination of theatre, music and visual storytelling.

Europa

Directed by internationally acclaimed theatre-maker Krzysztof Warlikowski, Europa examines how historical trauma shapes contemporary society and personal identity across generations.

Deutscher Herbst

Award-winning director Christopher Rüping presents one of the festival’s most important world premieres.

The production revisits post-war German history and explores what happens when freedom can no longer be taken for granted.

Dance programme

Dance remains a major pillar of the festival, with internationally renowned choreographers presenting new works.

Marina Abramović’s Balkan Erotic Epic

One of the festival’s biggest attractions is Balkan Erotic Epic, the latest large-scale work by world-famous performance artist Marina Abramović.

The production combines live performance, film, sculpture, dance and ritual, exploring the relationship between spirituality, mythology and erotic traditions in the Balkans. The work features approximately 40 performers and runs for around four hours.

Following sold-out performances and exceptional demand, additional ticket allocations have been released.
